Well-placed Mirrors Can Maintain the Illusion of Space
Tests have proved that those people who display mirrors spaced around their house are more likely to get on better in life and exhibit more confidence. As well as helping increase your self-confidence, mirrors help you with interior decorating issues, particularly if you do not have much space to play around with.
Interior decorating specialsts might advise you to hang a large wall mirror if you want to produce the illusion of additional space. If you have a partition that isn’t as spacious as you might like it to be and you’re not thrilled at the prospect of taking down partitions or replacing all the furnishings with something that might make the area seem broader, some well-placed floor to ceiling mirrors might very well have the desired effect. By reflecting the entire room, mirrors will give the effect that there’s double the room available.
But bear in mind, you can’t just go placing mirrors anywhere you want to. Mirrors cannot do any good if large items of furniture are blocking them, for instance. Pick a wall that will give people fewer chances to see their reflections because this could reduce the effect of space that you’re wanting to produce – opposite some good oak bookcases might be an excellent spot.
Of course, mirrors are integral to some pieces of household furniture in some rooms – vanity sinks, for instance, will have a mirror which will increase the sense of space.
To create the best illusion of extra space, study how the room is arranged and identify those parts of it that are not likely to be opposite where people will be sitting. Remember that the mirrors needn’t cover the entire surface of the wall, just the entire height. If you get it right, your floor to ceiling mirrors will create the illusion that there are entrances into other rooms, generating the illusion of spaciousness.
